Cloaked science: Disinformation in disguise – SMC Briefing

A visiting Harvard academic shines a light on the concept of “cloaked science” – how science channels can be used to spread disinformation with the appearance of scientific legitimacy.

The briefing comes as public consultation opens on proposals to regulate online services and media platforms in New Zealand.

  • Dr Joan Donovan is a leading expert in examining online extremism, media manipulation, and disinformation campaigns. She is the Research Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School.
