Science recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

Several prominent New Zealanders have been recognised for their services to science in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List, celebrating the Monarch’s 90th Birthday.

Selected examples are included below with quotes from their citations.

Mr Christopher Robert Mace, of Auckland, was made a Knight Companion of the  New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM), for services to science and education.

“Mr Christopher Mace has been Chairman of NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) since 2009.

During this time Mr Mace has forged relationships with other scientific entities and worked on improving the financial performance of NIWA.”

Dr Dianne Christine McCarthy, of Blenheim, was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM), for services to science, business and women.

“Dr Dianne McCarthy was Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand from 2007 until 2014 and is passionate about encouraging women to commence careers and develop their leadership potential within science and research.”

Professor Wei Gao, of Auckland, was made an Officer of the  New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM), for services to science and engineering.

“Professor Wei Gao is a world-renowned academic, and is one of New Zealand’s leading material scientists and engineers.

“Through his work, Professor Gao has made a significant impact in helping to address the environmental, industrial, and technological challenges facing New Zealand and the rest of the world. “
