Media advisor role – Science Media Centre

The Science Media Centre is seeking an experienced, news-savvy media advisor to join our team for a fixed-term maternity cover contract.

Join our small team dedicated to working with journalists and scientists to improve media coverage when science is in the headlines. You’ll work in a fast-paced environment where you are immersed in scientific research and responding to breaking news stories – be they natural disasters or medical research breakthroughs.

We’re looking for someone who can think strategically to identify new angles and find creative ways to promote evidence-based coverage of hot-button issues and breaking news.

You’ll help keep tabs on the latest developments across a wide range of science, health, technology, environment and agricultural topics, identifying areas of potential news interest.

You’ll be responsible for organising press conferences and online briefings, and proactively seeking out timely, informed commentary from experts.

You will ideally be familiar with the New Zealand science system and have a solid understanding of the local media landscape and the needs of journalists. Excellent writing skills are a must.

A science degree or extensive journalism experience will be advantageous.
