The International Year of the Potato (IYP) germinated in March 2007 when the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) in New York (NY) established an Informal International Steering Committee (IISC) and gave it a mission: to raise potato awareness (PA).
“It is amazing what human beings can achieve with dedication, belief and an expense account. The official launch of the IYP took place in NY just seven months later. The guest list sparkled: lofty UN officials, the entire IISC (and partners), UN delegates from all over the world, and countless representatives of the global potato community – all of them bent on a binge.”
